Money follows friendships

There are two parts to any successful business: having a product and selling it. Selling is the hard part.

The famous quote, “If you build it they will come” is wildly optimistic and situational. It’s not a bad thing, but anyone can build something. I’ve built a product and they’re not coming because simply building it isn’t enough. It doesn’t matter what your product is — even if you’re trying to sell ice to an eskimo — you have to be a good communicator and more importantly a good friend.

It’s all about making friends.  I am going to officially change that quote to “If you build it, your friends will come.”  Your friends (and family) will always be your biggest supporters. They will be your first customers and they will be with you till the end (which is hopefully no where in sight). People not only like helping out their friends, but they warm up and pay attention when you speak (for free!).

I’m not saying that your product will be successful or that it’s a good idea (seriously, what eskimo is likely to buy ice?), but building friendships will definitely increase the potential tenfold.

When I started Rockadoo I told all my friends and family about it. I spend a whopping $0 on marketing (excluding breath mints) and to this day that number hasn’t changed. Rockadoo has been profitable since day one. My friends and family are my biggest supporters and even if they don’t give me a dime, they give me their time and are likely to share it with others.

There’s nothing better than word of mouth. Really, there isn’t. Here, I’ll prove it to you. Girl scout cookies are delicious – tag-a-longs are my favorite, but I’ve never bought girl scout cookies from a grocery store. That box on the shelf isn’t speaking to you, it doesn’t say “buy me” it says “Tag-a-longs” with out-dated pictures of young girl scouts. Websites (at least the good non-annoying types) don’t speak to you either. Sure you can read the words, but they don’t actually talk to you. They aren’t friendly with you. They don’t really know you (well, as long as you clear your cookies frequently). Same goes for brick and mortar stores, office buildings or construction sites (if these things are talking to you I highly suggest calling your doctor immediately). When that girl scout comes to your door asking if you’d like to buy girlscout cookies, do you say no? Girl scouts make excellent business people.

Sure they’re cute and young, but they’re business people. They have a product and are selling it.

Friends will spread your word for free. In-fact, they’ll want to do it naturally – the best kind of marketing. No one’s shoving anything down their throats. They aren’t being paid for it. They are your friends and they are human and humans like helping other people out, especially their friends.

Social Media Tip of the Week

Facebook and Twitter are everywhere. You can tweet this or share that all over the web, but most likely, you’re doing it wrong. While they are powerful platforms, most companies, brands, and people are doing it all wrong.

In this new series I’ll introduce tips that will help you leverage social media platforms to the fullest. Don’t expect it to be easy because it’s not.

It’s all about interaction and I don’t mean “Check out my new product X, it does this and this and this and it’s awesome LOL!” Because that’s a load a bullshit and doesn’t work. You see it everywhere — people spamming their product like everyone should use it. Well those people are doing it wrong. Propaganda is for the website.

Twitter and Facebook are categorized under overly used and mis-understood term, “Social Media.” What is so social when you’re blabbing about your product?

Interact with your users and you build your brand. Chances are they already know about your product, but aren’t using it because you spam crap like this: “Check out my product – it helps you open jars that are hard to open!” Stop talking about your product and start making friends and building relationships — it goes a very long way.

Instead of spamming make friends with people even if they aren’t your customers. Chances are they’ll warm up to your product if you become friends with them. Humans are also likely to recommend you or your product it to a friend because they feel a connection. Think about it, if your best friend ran a landscaping business and your neighbor needed his lawn cut, who would you tell him to call?

Build connections with people and stay connected with them just like you would meet people at a bar, school, or the office. Talk about the same things and be personal. No body wants to talk to a billboard for a reason. It’s not easy and it takes time, but this is how you begin to build a long living brand.

Stop spamming and start making friends.

Speed Up Your iPhone: 8 Tips & Tricks

The iPhone 3GS is fast, much faster then it’s predecessor. Whether your iPhone is taking the extra second to recognize a button click or has long loading times, here are a few tips and tricks to help speed up your iPhone:

  • Leave free space. Leaving around 750MB of free space allows the iPhone to create more virtual memory.
  • Less Email! Email downloading in the background is the number one cause of my iPhone slowness. Under settings you’ll be able to show less recent message.
  • Get email less often. Uhh, What? It makes sense in terms of performance, but not to the email enthusiast. Checking for mail every 5 minutes will slow down your phone’s performance. Try using something longer – hourly or manually will greatly improve the performance of your phone for you email junkies.
  • Delete old text messages (SMS).
  • Apps Apps Apps! The more apps = the more screen rendering. Remove your unused apps.
  • Clear Safari’s cache. You can do so under settings > safari > clear cache.
  • Turn off Bluetooth and or WiFi. This can also help improve battery performance.
  • If all else fails, try doing a reboot. Hold both buttons for a few seconds.
